An insight into my way of thinking
For any of you who belong to a weekly networking group you will know that every so often you are invited to present for 8 or 10 mins on yourself and your business. Last week I presented some of the thinking that has massively helped me over the years and has had a massive impact on the people I work with, so this week I thought I would share it with you in the hope it has some of the same impact.
Over the years I’ve gathered a treasure trove of insights and philosophies that have significantly influenced me. While most of these ideas have been inspired by some of the greatest minds out there, a few are insights I’ve developed over time. Let me take you through some of the core beliefs that guide me, which I hope you find as transformative as I have.
Mindset Matters
I wrote an article about this last week, but it is so important I am going to cover it again. At the core of everything, I firmly believe that mindset is the key determinant of outcomes in our lives. How you think shapes everything you have or do not have in your life, your achievements, your happiness, the quality of your relationships, and the culture within your business. This is my way of saying, “You get what you focus on.” If you concentrate on all the bad, annoying, frustrating things in your life or in your business, you’ll just attract more of those. Focus instead on opportunities, and unbelievable possibilities arise.
A simple analogy from skiing illustrates this: when you focus on the trees instead of the gaps between them, you’re likely to hit the trees. The same logic applies to business and life. There’s a common thread among those who often say things like, “I don’t want to be broke,” you often find that they are exactly what they are focusing on, broke.
Decisions Drive Action
Decision-making is the engine of action. The leaders in your industry, your sport, your hobby make the hard decisions quickly and then act, this is the fastest and most effective route to huge results, Many people have ingrained this in my mind From Tony Robbins to Philip Hesketh, author of “How to Persuade and Influence People,
Who told me that “if its important you will find a way and if its not you will find an excuse”.
No matter what you do, whether it’s right or wrong is way less important than deciding to act and then acting. Stop waiting for things to be better or perfect, stop waiting to know more or for the best time there is no best time, and you are good enough now. You are the person, and this is the time to act
The Wisdom of Jim Rohn
One of my favourite business philosophers, Jim Rohn, in my mind he is the reason the modern life and business coaching industry exists, Tony Robbins who is probably the best known and most successful life and business coach on the planet, who has for 40 years been delivering seminars in every country to millions of people learnt his stuff from Jim Rohn when I worked for him.
He famously said, “Never wish life were easier; wish you were better.” This is basically saying if you were better your life would be easier. He also said “Work harder on yourself than you do on your Job”.
I’m going to say that again work harder on yourself than you do on your job or business.
How else you ever supposed to develop into the person capable of taking your business to the next level, if you don’t grow into that person.
It’s astonishing how many business owners stick with the same mindset and approach without seeking growth. Relying solely on experience, which is a terrible teacher as it only give you the lesson after you have gone through the pain, this approach limits potential. As the definition of insanity goes, doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results is counterproductive.
Let me remind you of Jim Rohn’s profound insight: you can embrace the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Choose discipline. Make learning a daily ritual commit to 30 minutes a day of a book, audio or talk that helps you to grow and gain knowledge you will be amazed at what you learn in a year..
Embrace Reality with Ray Dalio
Ray Dalio, a visionary behind Bridgewater Associates, offers wisdom in dealing with reality. He says you should always “accept reality and deal with it.” To reach your goals, you must first understand your current situation with clarity, don’t make it worse than it is, don’t make it better than it is just be clear on what the current reality is. Only then can you effectively navigate toward your goals.
Talking of goals I often say, “If you want to achieve anything then you need to know what anything looks like” This came from the philosophy that you should have big hairy audacious goals and that’s from Good to Great by Jim Collins
You need to have big goals, not because you want the money, not because you want the cars, or the houses, or any of the other material things, but because it is in the pursuit of your goals that you are forced to grow, people with big goals who work towards them have healthier happier longer less stressful lives that’s not just my belief there are multiple medical and psychological studies showing this is true.
Live with Passion
if you’re not passionate about what you do, then do something else, if your business doesn’t fire you up, change it or start another one, if you’re not getting out of bed every morning wondering what it is that you can do to improve, how you can become better and achieve more, then do something else because life is too short to settle,
