Why it’s ok to suck at some things
There are lots of things I am not good at, I can’t freehand draw or paint for toffee, give me a drawing board and a set of instruments and I can produce a pretty good technical drawing but art is a mystery to me, in a gallery there are things I like and things I don’t and things I really just don’t understand how they call it art and you know what? That’s ok, its ok not to be good at things.
I like playing guitar, yet I am a long way from good at it, I can only just about get a tune from one and yet enjoy doing it, I am not good at singing, ok that’s an understatement I suck at singing, oh my god, if its karaoke, get some ear plugs. I don’t do well at small talk, I prefer good conversations and deep thinking, I am not good with plants, my dad is brilliant he can make almost anything grow and grow well, I struggle to keep a house plant alive.
I know it may come as a shock that there are some things I don’t excel at, ok maybe it’s not a shock, and yet why am I so eager to tell you that I suck at some things?
Let’s look at the reality for a moment. I suck at the things I listed above, and I stuck at a few other activities as well. Is there a chance I could get better at drawing freehand, at appreciating art or playing the guitar? Yes of course I could, would I ever be world class, unlikely and for the same reason that I suck in the first place.
I just don’t have the desire to be good at them, oh I would like to play the guitar better, and it would be nice to be able to sing a song without people wincing and yet, deep down, when it comes to it, I just don’t care enough to put in the effort to be better.
I am good at a lot of things, and yet the things I really excel at, where I know I bring massive value is in the areas I am passionate about, the things that I truly care about deep down, and that is what this article is about, if you want excel you are going to need to be passionate about it, you are going to need to constantly learn adapt and grow, until you master the field and then you are going to need to keep learning growing and adapting to stay at the front of the curve.
The area in which I really excel, is in helping other people become better at improving the operations and growing whatever business it is they are passionate about, whether that’s delivering the best hand-crafted joinery, the most luxurious hot tubs or tree surgery that really stands out, I help them build a better business so they can have an easier, less stressful more fulfilling life, that’s what I am passionate about and I work hard to excel at doing that.
It is my hope that you take from this that even in running, improving and growing your business, you don’t need to be good at everything, it’s ok to suck at some of it, that is why we employ people or subcontract those things, if you are passionate about having a better business and serving more people with it, get good at that.
