Unravelling the Struggles of Identifying Desires and Why Owners Are Resisting Business Growth

One of the most common challenges I see people face is identifying what they really want from life, if you like their true desires that they hide away when the dreams of youth disappear. We live in a world that’s constantly bombarding us with messages about who we should be and what we should want. It’s no wonder that many of us struggle to hear our own inner voice!

This often leads to Businesses not growing pas the initial needs of the owners to replace an income or meet a financial need they had in the past and it leads to stagnation and sometimes to decline without the owner ever really being aware until the market has moved on, the competition have taken over and it’s too late to get their mojo back and lead the way again.

Why Owners Struggle with This:

  1. External Noise: Society, media, and even our well-meaning friends and family can drown out our true-life purpose. We get caught up chasing goals that aren’t ours.
  2. Fear of Judgment: We’re afraid of what people might think if we pursue what we truly want. This fear can paralyse us.
  3. Lack of Self-awareness: Many people haven’t taken the time to reflect on what truly matters to them, what it is that makes them, them, the underlying reasons that they value what they do. Self-discovery requires introspection and patience.

Strategies to Identify Your True Desires:

  1. Quiet the Noise: Spend time in solitude, meditate, or journal. These practices can help you connect with your inner self.
  2. Reflect on Joy: Think about the activities and moments that bring you genuine happiness. What were you doing? Who were you with? These clues can point you toward your true desires.
  3. Seek Feedback: Sometimes, others can see our strengths and passions more clearly than we can. Ask trusted friends and mentors for their insights.

Now, let’s talk about why business owners resist growth, which is a very common situation that I hear about everyday, it’s a situation often brought on by comfort, by having achieved a certain level of success and yet I believe this can be a very dangerous mindset to fall into, like everything in life a business is either growing or it is dying, the dearth maybe a long time coming yet if its not growing it will die eventually, it is simply easier to continue to grow than it is to attempt to maintain a status quo that is an illusion.

Reasons for Resisting Business Growth:

  1. Comfort Zone: Growth requires change and stepping out of our comfort zones. It’s human nature to resist this.
  2. Fear of Failure: The bigger the growth, the bigger the risk. Fear of losing everything can be a significant obstacle.
  3. Resource Constraints: Time, money, and energy are limited. The perceived resources needed for growth can deter many from pursuing it.

Strategies to Overcome Growth Resistance:

  1. Shift Your Mindset: Embrace new goals and challenges decide on what is next for you on what you will leave behind and start to see change as an opportunity rather than a threat. Focus on the potential rewards rather than the risks.
  2. Develop a Plan: Break down the growth process into manageable steps. A clear, actionable plan can make growth seem less daunting.
  3. Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network. Mentors, coaches, and peers can provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability.

Remember, the journey to self-discovery and business growth isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Embrace the process, be patient, and stay committed to your vision.
